We have to figure out how to stop attacking folks who are voting for Trump and start listening to why without judgement. People vote their emotions and fears...Trump knows this and he is using it...
There's a huge amount of disgust and superiority in the east with working class white folks that shuts down a dialogue because we assume they're not smart enough for us to talk to... But here's the thing, I've a poor working class black folks and they aren't dumb. They vote their hearts...they vote from what they fear happening to their children... White folks voting for trump are doing the same....we need to figure out what we're missing in this equation and a sense of intellectual superiority supported by lots of intellectual arguments is not going to change hearts...Half the country is being ignored and feel even more ignored by all of the current civil rights movements that don't address their issues: folks feel like their world is being torn asunder and it is... Is that right? No, it's human and that's what we're not addressing...Poor/working class whites have always taken an ass-kicking in this country and they are half the country....we need to find a way to speak to each other... the key is to find out what set of emotional triggers are driving those statements...ask them for a video example of what they're talking about...usually folks are responding to an emotional trigger or fear and that is what's driving the listening...fear of losing their job, their footing, their benefits, they had insurance and Obama care didn't work, or Hilary's policies screwed over their kid who had to go to war, immigrants are in the majority in their neighborhood, they have high taxes because of something a democrat did......it's always something...including all of the civil rights movements going on in this country right now...they are black and gay for the most part, so a huge part of the population, poor and working class whites are taking a real ass-kicking financially too, but their concerns seem not to be met... It doesn't mean trump is going to respond to their concerns once he's in the white house, but he can certainly respond to those feelings and concerns in his conversations...he speaks to a certain, very tired scared populace...we have to learn to speak to them too because they make up the other half of this country and if anything is going to change, we have to start talking to each other... people vote because of the way someone makes them feel, not because of questions of logic and finance... He's not talking to us which is why we don't like him...that's intentional...it's the same exact way the Bushes came into the white house... we have to figure out a way around that, because yelling at people to make what we perceive as the logical choice never has worked...people vote their feelings... For example, no one in this country cared about the Montgomery boycott until the news was filled with images of children being hosed by dogs and beaten by police...that was a real strategy...once that happened, white liberal jews from NYC got on buses, went down south and joined the fight...and that is when the tide turned... The civil rights movement used a strategy to tap into peoples feelings about seeing a child attacked by grown men who are supposed to protect them....all logic went out of the window and all people could think about was their own children... People are moved to action by their feelings...and nothing else....
