I have a neighbor who no matter what's going on, once the first summer rain happens, he runs outside to play in the rain. I asked why and he said, because I was always running to take care of the house, rake the leaves, clean the drains, maintain a nice house so no one on my street would judge me. And one day, I realized, my life has been about taking care of a house when really I just wanted to dance in the rain...for me.
This has stayed with me...as I struggle with my clients to get them to focus on their deepest wants and desires. It becomes an ongoing battle as the writing coach says, "just stay, just stay without judgement and write whatever comes up." It's incredible how difficult it is for women, in particular, to focus on being still and not doing for others.
