I get so many letters from folks talking about they don't know where to start and they don't know how to write.
Here's a secret. Neither did I. My hands would shake everytime picked up a journal and tried to write. This happened daily for 10 straight years. Somewhere, Someone had told me I had no right to write. That my voice didn't matter. That just talking and telling stories was not writing. And in my TED Talk, I talk about the first time someone made me feel invisible. It was a well-meaning teacher who took things so literally, that she missed the big picture. Learning is about a kid owning their own story. Not just memorizing and regurgitating some dumb set of historical facts about Columbus that are cloudy at best and far from the reality. Learning is about a child understanding that their story of who they are is what will carry them in this world. It's self definition. And until you take your story in your hands and own it, you will always be someone looking for validation, a job, success and happiness. Here's how I got through that bullshit. I'm going to tell you a story. And then I want you to tell me your story Here's how: _After you read my story below, email me and tell me why you're not writing your story right now._ I guarantee you that the act of writing the email to me and explaining why you're not writing will tell you all about your bullshit and force you to take some positive action in your own behalf. Guaranteed. ---------- So cowards need not apply. LOL Why are you waiting for someone else to give you a story to tell, as if you cannot be a writer unless you're interpreting someone else's story. If you can do it on your own, start writing the story you're dying to read. But if you need some support, check out this video from the Solo Show Slam. I'm listening... Go.
